Welcome to the Cloutier / Clutchey Family Website
|
The Cloutier family is documented as one of the oldest Canadian Families and has over 10,500 descendents. With that many relatives the 'story' of the Cloutier family isn't a single tale, it is a book of many chapters, and we are compiling them here. Reading the dry facts of a family history can be very boring, and for that reason we have broken the stories into generations starting with Zacharie Cloutier I. Although we can go back further to Dénis Cloutier Born 1560 - Died 1634 (Zacharie Cloutier I's father) and even Nicholas Cloutier Born Circa 1544 - Died Circa 1626 (Zacharie Cloutier I's grandfather). Records from the 1500's are fragile or non-existant so we begin with Zacharie Cloutier I. Not only because we have documented proof of the families deaths and births but because his immigration to Canada with his young family sets the scene for many generations to come. |

Many people have written about the Cloutier Family; genealogists, authors, amateur historians, even our children, writing for class projects. We know people are passionate about historical accuracies and we admit there may be date errors and name errors. After all, we are relying on the interpretations of 500 year old records of Catholic Parishes as well as oral family histories. If you find a mistake please email me the supporting document and I will gladly change the records.
The name game.
The name Cloutier is French and comes from the contraction of the French word "clou" meaning nail and "metier" meaning to make; thus a Cloutier was a 'maker of nails' by trade or occupation. Making the nails was done by using drop forges. Today a drop forge is the process of shaping metal into complex shapes by dropping heated metal into a punch and die which compresses to gradually change the shape of the metal.
In the 1500's the metal was heated and shaped by hand with a hammer. This was a specialized occupation and the nails were used for horse shoes for the military. Furniture makers of the time were still using wooden pegs for nails.
